Time-and-a-half calculator

Updated 2026-10-24

Time and a half = your hourly rate × 1.5. Multiply that by your overtime hours and add it to your normal pay.

Quick table

Hourly rateTime and a halfDouble time
$20$30$40
$25$37.50$50
$30$45$60
$35$52.50$70
$40$60$80

Worked example

You earn $28/hour and work 46 hours this week. Normal pay: 40 × $28 = $1,120. Overtime: 6 × ($28 × 1.5 = $42) = $252. Total: $1,372 before tax.

Australia: tiered overtime

Many awards pay 150% for the first two or three overtime hours and 200% after that, with separate weekend and public-holiday rates. Check your award on the Fair Work Pay Calculator.

Clockwell does this automatically: tap to clock on and off, and it applies overtime, weekend and evening rates to every shift. Also see the shift pay calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate time and a half?

Multiply your normal hourly rate by 1.5. At $30 an hour, time and a half is $45 an hour, so 4 overtime hours pay $180.

When does time and a half apply?

In the US it applies to hours over 40 in a workweek for non-exempt workers under the FLSA. In Australia, awards commonly pay 150% for the first 2–3 overtime hours, then 200%.

Is time and a half the same as 150%?

Yes. Time and a half, 1.5x and 150% all mean the same rate.
