Gallery wall spacing: how far apart to hang frames
Updated 2026-10-24
Leave 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) between frames, and keep that gap identical everywhere. Even gaps are what make a mixed set of frames look planned.
Gap size by situation
| Situation | Gap |
|---|---|
| Small frames (under 11 × 14 in) | 1.5–2 in (4–5 cm) |
| Most mixed walls | 2–3 in (5–8 cm) |
| Large frames, high ceilings | 3–4 in (8–10 cm) |
| Group to furniture below | 6–10 in (15–25 cm) |
How wide the whole group should be
Above a sofa, bed or console, make the group about ⅔ to ¾ of the furniture's width and centre it on the furniture. On an open wall, leave at least a hand's width of clear wall at each side so the group doesn't look jammed in.
A method that keeps gaps identical
- Cut a spacer from card or scrap wood at your gap size.
- Hang the anchor (largest or central) frame first.
- Hold the spacer against its edge to place the next frame, check it with a level, and mark.
- Work outward. Re-check against your floor or sofa line every two or three frames, so errors don't build up.
