How high to hang a gallery wall
Updated 2026-10-24
Hang the centre of the whole arrangement about 57–60 inches (145–152 cm) from the floor. Above furniture, ignore that rule and start the bottom row 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) above the back of the sofa, bed or console.
The two rules that cover almost every wall
| Where | Rule | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open wall, hallway | Centre of the whole group at 57–60 in (145–152 cm) | Museum eye-level standard, so the group reads as one piece |
| Above a sofa | Lowest frame 6–10 in (15–25 cm) above the sofa back | Connects art to furniture; heads don't hit frames |
| Above a bed | Lowest frame 6–12 in (15–30 cm) above the headboard | Room to sit up and lean back |
| Above a console or sideboard | 8–10 in (20–25 cm) above the top, leaving room for lamps | Objects on the console shouldn't cover the art |
| Staircase | Centre each frame about 57–60 in above the stair nosing directly below it | The group follows the pitch of the stairs |
Step by step: from layout to nail marks
- Measure the whole arrangement. Lay the frames on the floor with even gaps and measure total height and width.
- Find the top of the group. Open wall: top = 57 in + half the group height. Above a sofa: top = sofa back height + gap + group height.
- Work out each frame's top edge from the top of the group and your gaps.
- Measure each hanger drop. Pull the wire taut with a finger, the way a nail would hold it, and measure from the top of the frame down to it. For D-rings, measure to the top of the ring and note the distance between the two rings.
- Nail height = frame top − hanger drop. Measure every mark from the floor (or sofa top) and one fixed edge, never from the frame you just hung. Small errors add up across a wall.

Common mistakes
- Hanging too high. The most common one. If you have to look up at the centre of the group, drop it.
- Measuring the wire slack. A wire lying flat sits higher than it will on a nail. Always measure it pulled taut.
- Centring on the wall instead of the furniture. Above a sofa, centre the group on the sofa.
- Uneven floors. In older houses, mark a level pencil line at a round height and measure from that instead of the floor.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 57 inch rule?
Galleries hang art so the centre sits about 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor, roughly average eye level. For a gallery wall, apply it to the centre of the whole group, not each frame.
How far above a sofa should a gallery wall start?
Leave about 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) between the sofa back and the bottom of the lowest frame. Closer than 6 in and heads touch the frames; much more than 10 in and the art floats away from the furniture.
Do I measure to the top of the frame or to the hook?
Work out where the top of each frame goes, then subtract the hanger drop: the distance from the top of the frame to the taut wire, D-ring or sawtooth. That gives the nail height.
