Common frame sizes for gallery walls
Updated 2026-10-26
Most gallery walls mix a large anchor frame (16x20 in or 18x24 in) with mid-size 8x10 and 11x14 frames and a few small 5x7s.
Standard frame sizes
| Size (in) | Approx. (cm) | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| 4x6 | 10x15 | Small filler |
| 5x7 | 13x18 | Small filler |
| 8x10 | 20x25 | Mid size |
| 11x14 | 28x36 | Mid size |
| 12x16 | 30x40 | Mid size |
| 16x20 | 41x51 | Anchor |
| 18x24 | 46x61 | Anchor |
| 24x36 | 61x91 | Statement piece |
Outside the US, A-series frames (A4, A3, A2) are common. A3 is about 30x42 cm and sits well beside 12x16 frames.
Choosing a mix
- Start with one anchor and build outward.
- Repeat each size at least twice so the wall looks intentional.
- Keep gaps of 2 to 3 in (5 to 8 cm) between frames; see gallery wall spacing.
Lintel lets you enter your real frame sizes and see the layout at true size on your wall before you put in a single nail.
Frequently asked questions
What frame sizes are best for a gallery wall?
A mix of one or two large anchors (16x20 in or 18x24 in), several mid sizes (11x14 in, 8x10 in) and a few small frames (5x7 in) gives a balanced look.
Should all gallery wall frames be the same size?
No. Matching frames suit a tidy grid, while mixed sizes suit a relaxed salon layout. Keep the gaps between frames consistent either way.
