How to hang a picture with two D-rings
Updated 2026-10-26
Measure the gap between the two D-rings and how far each sits below the top of the frame, then put two nails at the same height that same distance apart.
Step by step
- Decide where the top of the frame should go and mark it lightly in pencil.
- Pull each D-ring upright (taut, the way it will hang) and measure the distance between them.
- Measure from the top of each raised D-ring to the top edge of the frame. This is the drop.
- On the wall, measure down the drop from your top mark and draw a level line.
- Mark the two nail points on that line, centred on where the frame should sit, the D-ring distance apart.
- Use a spirit level (or your phone) to check both marks are level before you drill or nail.
Tips
- If the rings are not the same height on the frame, measure each drop separately.
- Painter's tape across the back of the frame lets you mark both rings, then move the tape to the wall.
- For heavier frames, use picture hooks rated for the weight, or see how to hang heavy pictures.
Lintel works out the nail positions for every frame in a gallery wall, including two-point hangers, so each mark is in the right place.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need two nails for two D-rings?
Yes. One nail or hook under each D-ring keeps the frame level and stops it tilting, which is the main reason frames come with two.
How do you measure where to put the nails for D-rings?
Pull each D-ring taut toward the top of the frame, measure the distance between them and the drop from each ring to the frame top, then mark both nails at the same height that far apart.
